Today, March 21, the reform of the Traffic and Road Safety Law enters into force, with significant changes to our day-to-day driving.
No more exceeding the maximum speed when overtaking
You can no longer exceed the maximum speed allowed by 20 km/h to overtake other vehicles. In this way, if we have the typical trailer of endless meters, we will have to overtake it at the maximum speed that the road on which we circulate allows, without exceeding a single kilometer per hour.
Four points for not wearing a seat belt
Believe it or not, the percentage of drivers and passengers who are still not wearing a seatbelt, even in the front seats, is still very noticeable. For this reason, and as today the veteran seat belt continues to be the best element to avoid damage or even death in an accident, not using it properly will subtract four points from the driver of the vehicle.
The happy mobile can now take up to six points
An element that has already become “classic” when it comes to subtracting points is the use of the mobile phone, in any of its forms, either to talk or, mainly, to post those messages, those as important to us as to put our lives at risk, that of the passengers we carry on board and those of the people who share our surroundings when driving in a vehicle. Depending on the severity of the infraction, you can lose up to six points, half of the original ones.
Throwing objects, another six points less
Another of the most capital sins of Spanish drivers is undoubtedly throwing all kinds of objects out of the window, in full gear. Leaving aside the absolute lack of education and respect for the environment, these objects can be the cause of fires or accidents. The loss of points for this circumstance also rises to six points.
Overtaking cyclists, complete on highways and highways
Cyclists, who are more and more numerous on our roads, especially on weekends, are the great black spot of driving in Spain. Now, the sanctions are tougher, up to the loss of another six points, if a cyclist or a group of cyclists are overtaken and the adjacent lane is not fully occupied on roads with two or more lanes in each direction. On two-way roads, the obligation to leave at least a meter and a half of separation with the cyclist or cyclists remains.
Pedestrians, more preferably
Pedestrians now have the right of way over vehicles at crosswalks, on sidewalks, and in pedestrian areas.
Approved communication devices can be used on motorcycles
Now, if you have a motorcycle or moped, you can use certified or approved wireless devices in your helmet for communication or navigation purposes.
Do not carry or misuse the case, four points
The great “sin” of the users of motorcycles and mopeds, not carrying or misusing the case, sees its penalty increased to the loss of four points.
Alcohol rate 0.0 for minors
If you are a minor and you drive any vehicle approved for your age, the alcohol rate must be absolutely nil. And furthermore, non-compliance with the rule that prohibits Personal Mobility Vehicles from traveling on motorways and dual carriageways will be pursued more actively.
It is strictly prohibited to stop or park in lanes or lanes for cyclists
From now on it is considered a serious offense to stop or park a vehicle on bike lanes or on roads reserved for cyclists, both in the city and on the highway.

In order to be able to recover lost points, we have to accumulate two “clean” years, without receiving any sanction. If we do some of the DGT road safety courses, we can recover up to two points.
500 euros for using “digital cheat sheets”
When it comes to obtaining our card, or taking points recovery courses, using digital devices that “help” us to pass will result in a fine of 500 euros, in addition to being prohibited from re-introducing ourselves for six months.
Three points for using radar detectors or jammers
The so famous radar detectors and inhibitors are still in fashion, and they will cost us three points if we are caught with them installed in our cars, even if they are not working.
