Pere Navarro, on the change of the DGT labels: “We will do it, but not at this time”

For some time, the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) plans to make changes to the current system of environmental badges. However, in the wake of the pandemic, those same plans have been .

This was reaffirmed by the General Director of Traffic, Pere Navarro, during his participation this Wednesday in the Information Meeting ‘Reform of the Traffic and Road Safety Law’, organized by Europa Press, with the collaboration of CEPSA.

Asked about the possibility of undertaking changes before the end of the present legislature, the director general ruled it out. At least for the moment. “We will do it, but not at this time, it is parked”, he indicated, confirming that this measure is expected to be resumed in the following legislature.

Redesign and new label

Like , the plans of the entity headed by Navarro included reformulating the environmental labeling system for vehicles, also considering readjusting the criteria for motorcycles. It is even contemplated to include some additional category for the newest cars and, consequently, less polluting.

This claim responds to the criticism that the current system has accumulated since its creation, back in 2016. The classification that currently determines whether a car has the ‘B’, ‘C’, ‘Eco’ or ‘0’ sticker allows, for example, a plug-in hybrid vehicle is exempt from any restriction even if it only drives its combustion engine. Or, for example, that a diesel car is categorized as a more polluting vehicle than a microhybrid when, in the case of some of the largest and most powerful SUVs, those classified as ‘C’.

In addition to readjusting the current classification criteria, the DGT would have in mind to present a new sticker: the ‘D’. This would be reserved for the newest gasoline or diesel vehicles, much less polluting than the same ones that were sold 10 or more years ago.

In this sense, it should be noted that (to date) the ‘C’ label is awarded to those gasoline cars registered from 2006 (16 years ago) and diesel cars registered from 2014.
