Should a slash be put at the end of the URL? – .com

One of the first points I analyze when I start a Online Marketing Audit for a client, is the permalink structure (permalinks).

We all know they must be friendly (user-friendly)what is called url seo. That is to say, that it has a certain meaning for humans (and the seekers). For example, a button:

  • https:///code_ups?=34.cgi/4815162342?=lost (Ugly, fatal, and horrible URL)
  • https:///posicionamiento-natural/principales-buscadores/ (Nice, friendly, user friendly URL)

But there is always a question… Should the slash be put at the end of the URL? Until today each teacher had his booklet. There were those who said yes, those who said no, and those who said nothing. Some argued that it depended on whether the URL was a directory or a file, as follows:

  • https:///marketingonline/ (with slash, indicating directory)
  • https:///marketingonline (without bar, indicating file)

Finally, Google has ruled on the subject, where it says that… does not matter! 🙂

According to Maile Ohye (Google Developer Programs Tech Lead), Google treats URLs equally, regardless of whether it is a file or a directory, and therefore whether it has a slash or not. And that in fact, technically they are two different URLs. So, you should not worry about knowing which version to choose, but about choose only one of the two. That is to say, that you choose the one you choose, you must make sure that it is the only it works. To verify that this is the case, simply enter any address on your website with and without a slash.

In my case, if I enter https:// (without bar)it is redirected to https:/// (with bar). This is very important, for do not create duplicate content. If you can access your website with the URL with a slash and without it, you must fix it as follows:

  1. To choose one of the two. With or without a bar, but take your pick!
  2. Be consistent with the chosen version, and always use it (with internal and external links, sitemap, etc.)
  3. establishes a 301 redirect (or a rel=”canonical” if you can’t)
  4. Check that you have done well in .
  5. Check those of Webmastertools
