Smartick launches a new method to promote reading among the youngest

Reading is a basic skill for the acquisition of knowledge. However, the results of Spanish students in international reading tests show that there is still a long way to go in this area at the end of secondary school. The objective of Smartick Reading is for children to be able to read fluently, understanding what they read, enjoying reading and promoting imagination and creativity. The founders of Smartick, Javier Arroyo and Daniel González de Vega, detail what this project consists of.

Why was Smartick Reading born?

Reading is a skill for the acquisition of knowledge. A good reading fluency allows us to understand the world around us, opens the doors of knowledge and gives wings to our inspiration, creativity and imagination. Therefore, a good reading comprehension is a guarantee of school success in all curricular areas. Mastering reading comprehension improves the academic performance of students not only in language subjects, but in other disciplines.

What will you offer students?

Prepare students, in the infant stage, for learning to read and improve the mechanics and reading comprehension of primary and secondary school students.

To which specific profile of students is it directed?

Smartick Reading develops children’s reading skills and comprehension according to their age and level:

– 4 years: works discrimination, identification and manipulation of syllables, syllabic awareness.

– 5-6 years: trains the ability to identify and manipulate sounds, phonemic awareness and the relationships between letters and consonant sounds.

– 7-8 years: train automation, expressiveness, understanding of simple sentences and short texts.

– From 9 years: reading speed continues to improve and work on higher processes of comprehension of complex sentences, resolution of anaphoras or making inferences.

What exactly does Smartick Reading consist of?

The Smartick Reading Program is based on the Smartick Method and its Artificial Intelligence -fully proven in the case of Mathematics- to offer a personalized Reading and Reading Comprehension study plan, adapting the content to the pace and ability of each child, in a daily session of 15 minutes, 7 days a week, as a complement to school.

It has interactive support tutorials to explain new concepts and has a gamification layer during the session to boost motivation and positive reinforcement.

At the end of the sessions, children can access a virtual world in which there are games scientifically designed to enhance cognitive abilities such as attention, memory and concentration. In addition, they have an avatar that lives in a room that they furnish as they earn ticks (prizes) in their session.

What role does artificial intelligence have in this project?

Smartick’s artificial intelligence makes it possible to offer a personalized study plan, adapting the pace and difficulty to the student in real time, allowing them to always work at the frontier of their maximum level of competence. To do this, you only have to carry out a daily 15-minute session (without rigid schedules) from a computer or tablet, without traveling.

How is the personalized study plan organized for each student?

The curriculum organizes activities around four components:

1. Accuracy: read any word without making mistakes.

2. Speed: read correctly and at a speed that corresponds to their age.

3. Intonation: read with the proper intonation.

4. Reading comprehension: understand the message of sentences and written texts.

What are the main reading skills that Smartick Reading promotes?

Get children from the age of four to learn to read, read accurately and fluently and understand what they read.

How can parents be involved in this learning process?

Students receive the evaluation in real time and parents can monitor the sessions thanks to timely and detailed information on their children’s daily activity and their evolution in the program (trajectory, improvement of concepts).

In what way could reading be encouraged in the youngest?

Ideally, children understand reading as something fun and as another game. It is important that they are the ones who show interest in the world of reading and discover for themselves those books that catch their attention or arouse their curiosity. It is not advisable to force or impose a child to read one book or another.

What are the objectives of Smartick Reading in the medium-long term?

We hope that parents trust the experience of the Smartick method to improve their reading fluency and comprehension from now on, as they have done with our mathematics program, which was attended by more than 100,000 students around the world in the hardest months of school confinement.
