Star Wars ‘toys’ to invest in

The day has come. December 18, 2015 will go down in film history as one of the most anticipated moments for fans of the galactic saga. The force has already awoken and the biggest fans have come to make endless queues during the early hours so as not to miss, costume on, the first special session in order to quench that thirst for Star Wars that they have been dragging for months.

The awakening of the force has created such an expectation that it will culminate in breaking the box office of any room in the world. JJ Abrams, the director and screenwriter of the seventh installment, now carries a great weight on his back in order to do justice to what thousands of fans expect. But not only movies move millions of bills. This franchise is capable of mobilizing masses willing to spend a lot of money on any object that represents this trilogy.

Some fans have impressive collections of a particular product: the figures or toys that were born in the middle of pop culture. One of them is Steve Sansweet, a former Lucasfilm employee as well as the founder and president of the Obi-Wan Ranch in Northern California – a non-profit museum that houses the largest Star Wars collection in the world. A repertoire that consists of almost a million items and is valued at approximately several million dollars.

They don’t have to be gold-plated or full of precious stones, what makes these items so exclusive is their rarity and the few copies that saw the light. If among your most precious objects you find a piece of junk from past decades that nobody has, keep it well, because it is probably a gold mine.

Here are some of the most popular Star Wars toys priced over thousands of dollars:

10. Sideshow Collectibles Obi-Wan Kenobi: $2,000

Sideshow Collectibles released 200 copies of this life-size figure of the legendary character Obi-Wan Kenobi. Back then its selling price was two thousand dollars, but now on the second-hand market you could get much more for it.

With this figure we are not talking about an object to play with. In fact, the clothes he wears are hand-sewn and could be mistaken for a true Jedi Master.

9. Double-telescoping Figures: $2,000 to $18,000

In this specimen the saber makes the difference. All original parts belong to a rather rare first edition that used a different production method when designing the lightsaber.

Darth Vader, Obi-Wan or Luke presented in their hands a weapon made up of two pieces of plastic, unlike the one we can find today and which only contains one.

Although it is very difficult to find one of these dolls in perfect condition, if you do, you can get up to two thousand dollars. And if you also include the original lightsaber, exorbitant prices can be reached for a small portion of plastic.

8. Yak Face: $2,300

Not being the favorite character for anyone does not imply that its value decreases. Yak Face made a brief appearance in the Return of the Jedi chapter, but no one noticed him until now.

Fans have raised their cache for being a limited production figure. This object never saw the light in the United States, it was only released in Australia, Canada and Europe, where it was distributed in some stores and was quickly forgotten.

7. Lego Millennium Falcon: $4,000 to $5,000

It must be the most expensive piece of junk on the planet. The legendary ship of the space saga that Lego launched in 2007 has multiplied by 10 its starting price -500 dollars- for being the largest set for both the firm and the film.

Multiple versions of the Millennium Falcon have been released, including the new one from The Force Awakens that is currently in stores, but none as valuable as this one. However, if Lego decided to introduce a new Ultimate Collector version, the price of this relic would plummet.

6. Star Wars Vlix: Droids: $6,000

Probably this strange figure is known by very few. Vlix Oncard was the villain of the Star Wars: Droids cartoons, so he has additional value by not just belonging to the trilogy.

Its rarity meant that it was only released in Brazil, and if it’s still in its package, you can get up to $6,000 for it. Vlix’s surname -Oncard- is a reference to the figure’s rarity and value.

5. Empire Strikes Back Medical Droid: $10,000

Fifth place is occupied by a Palitoy toy from 1980. It is an android, but not just any, but the doctor who treated Luke at Echo Base at the beginning of The Empire Strikes Back.

His name is FX-7 and thanks to his help and the courage of Han Solo, who once again saved Skywalker’s life after almost freezing to death on the planet Hoth, we were able to continue enjoying the company of the Jedi protagonist.

Last year at an auction a big fan of the robot bought a mint condition piece of this heroic mechanical man for over ten thousand dollars.

4. Unpainted Boba Fett Prototype: $17,000

It is one of the few prototypes known to exist, as the toy was banned as a choking hazard to children due to the rocket projection jetpack missile attached to its back. On the occasion of being released to coincide with the character’s appearance in The Empire Strikes Back.

MMA TapouT sportswear company co-founder Dan “Punkass” Caldwell purchased this unpainted bounty hunter warrior for a total of $17,000.

3. Undrilled Boba Fett: $27,000

The Mandalorian hunter is undoubtedly one of the most popular characters in the saga. That is one of the reasons that make this fighter an important investment. Especially if it remains in its original box, in perfect condition and without being perforated.

Earlier this year, such a Politoy piece sold at auction for a whopping $27,000.

2. Rare Rocket Firing Boba Fett: $50,000

Since Kenner, the North American toy company, withdrew sales of this figure after the death of a child who drowned with the projectile, the value of the copies that few were able to obtain has risen.

On Kevin Smith’s television show -comic book writer and film director and screenwriter, Comic Book Men, a Star Wars fan appeared with the intention of selling this exclusive toy.

Its perfect condition, the rarity of its existence and the history behind this copy, make it one of the most expensive pieces of Star Wars.

1. Jawa with vinyl cape: $53,000

It’s amazing that a doll that was nobody’s favorite can fetch such value on the collectors’ market. That itself, the rarity of this figure, is what makes it unique. Although, specifically, we are talking about a very special edition: this one carries a layer of vinyl. While most were made of cloth, in this case another material was used because it belonged to the first editions.

This version was quickly replaced, which is why finding one of them is very difficult. It’s usually worth $10,000 or more, but if it’s in mint condition and unused, it’s been found on eBay for $53,000.
