Sungazing, or the sun as therapy

Sungazing, also known as sun healing, sun gazing, sun yoga, surya yoga, or sun yoga, is all the rage. It literally means ‘gazing at the sun’ (sun = sun / gazing = staring), and in practice it is nothing more than the discipline of looking directly at the sun in order, according to its proponents, to receive nourishment, healing and spiritual enlightenment.

Benefits based on the proven fact that sun exposure activates the pineal gland and is essential to maintain a good level of vitamin D. In addition, practiced with common sense and great caution, it can help us improve the quality of life and certain deficiencies and ailments , such as hormonal disorders, stress, insomnia, anxiety or depression.

Although you may think it is a new fashionable English term, it is an ancient practice that consists of looking at the sun for a few seconds to receive its many benefits.

Sun gazing originated in India over two thousand years ago with the teachings of Mahavir of Jain, also known as Mahavira or Vardhamana. Therapy that was also practiced by the ancient Egyptians, Aztecs, Greeks and Mayans, as well as in Tibetan yoga and in some traditions such as Qigong and Tai Chi.

If you want to know more, you should meet Hira Ratan Manek, better known as HRM. He was born in 1937 in India, and since 1995, he claims to live exclusively on solar energy and water, without other food, although various sources deny this. What is certain is that, after thirty years of research and personal practice, he spreads his method throughout the world with free conferences and courses, and has been the subject of many articles, interviews and even a film (Hira Raran Manek: the messenger of the Sun). In 2002, he established the Solar Healing Center, based in Orlando, Florida, and today there are several solar healing centers around the world, and thousands of enthusiastic followers.

According to him, his goal is “to share his knowledge for the improvement of life on the planet and help people to heal physically, emotionally and mentally, and to develop spiritually.”

Ensures that looking at the sun is not dangerous, as long as it is done in the hours of low radiation. “The first rays of sun in the morning and the last rays of the afternoon are more beneficial than television and computers. The safe zone is not dangerous. The eyes need good light to be healthy. No one has damaged their eyes by looking in the sun in the safe window of time and for a few seconds.

In any case, and as the Pajama Surf platform said a long time ago, “without recommending the extreme practice of sungazing, there is no doubt that feeling the heat of the sun, meditating a little about its energy and perhaps being grateful for its sustenance, is something highly healthy, perhaps part of the most endearing and pleasant mystery of being human on a planet about eight light minutes from the Sun”.

Its benefits

According to Hira Ratan Manek, some of its many benefits are: the mind is filled with positive thoughts and is strengthened; increases energy level and decreases appetite; health and peace of mind are obtained; activates the pineal gland, restores normal melatonin levels and the health of the endocrine system. Sleep disorders are healed. According to the researcher, all this will be reflected in the physical body, since with a peaceful mind, the body heals and heals itself, letting go of allergies, respiratory disorders and other diseases. The root of all diseases is physical weakness. As the body weakens, it stops working optimally, with a weak immune system. Receiving more sunlight, the body will increase its defenses, improving its immune and self-healing power. We have all enjoyed sunrises and sunsets for long periods without being damaged. In the same way, if we practice safe sungazing during the recommended hours, we will obtain good mental, physical and spiritual health.

As practiced?

Its practice requires contemplation of the sun once a day, during the first hour after sunrise or during the last hour before sunset, hours in which infrared and ultraviolet radiation is zero or minimal, thus avoiding eye or body damage.

The technique is very simple. It should be done barefoot on the ground, staring at the sun for ten seconds, increasing by ten seconds each day of practice. Following these rules the exercise is safe.

The HRM method of sungazing can be practiced by anyone, anywhere in the world, all year round. There are no restrictions. If it is practiced following the recommendations, with faith and trust, free of doubts and with understanding, mental, physical and spiritual health is acquired.
