Telefónica Spain renews its leadership with Sergio Oslé as CEO

Telefónica España changes its second step, just below the president Emilio Gayo, to incorporate Sergio Oslé as the new CEO of the subsidiary. The now president of Movistar+ will combine this activity, while incorporating the functions of CEO in the telecommunications operator in Spain.

The restructuring of functions at Telefónica Spain leads María Jesús Almazor, until now CEO of the Spanish subsidiary, to new global roles at Telefónica Tech, under the supervision of José Cerdán. Specifically, Almazor will be the new CEO of Telefónica Tech’s cybersecurity and cloud division. Until now, the digital security business corresponded to Hugo Santos, while the cloud services activity was led by Pedro Pablo Pérez. From now on, both Santos and Pérez will continue on the same teams, reporting to Almazor. In turn, the Telefónica Tech division dedicated to the Internet of Things (IoT) and Big Data has not experienced any changes, with Gonzalo Martín Villa leading these businesses.

According to what elEconomista.es has been able to learn from sources familiar with the situation, the appointments and remuneration committee of the teleco has approved the new responsibilities of Oslé and Almazor in an environment characterized by commercial and technological dynamism.

Sergio Oslé, a telecommunications engineer from the University of the Basque Country and an MBA from Stanford University Graduate School of Business, was a partner for 13 years at the strategic consulting firm McKinsey & Co, where he was responsible for the Telco and Media accounts, from September 2004 to his incorporation to the Telefónica group, at the end of 2017. Passionate about communications, technology, video and entertainment, Oslé treasures a recognized global vision of the pay television business by knowing closely other major audiovisual markets. In the last major remodeling of the management staff of Telefónica Spain, Oslé was responsible for Marketing and Product for the General Public, as well as president of Movistar+ and will continue to be responsible for the areas of Commercial and Marketing for the General Public and Companies, Video Spain, Network and IT Operations, Territories, Transversal Processes and Simplification.

In the words of Emilio Gayo, Chairman of Telefónica Spain, “the appointment of Oslé as CEO is in line with the strategy that we have been setting out and that was reinforced a few weeks ago: the customer is at the center and all decisions are made with that criteria. Sergio has had my confidence in his current role and has shown me his ability, commitment and customer knowledge. Now he is expanding his responsibilities to promote Telefónica Spain as the best company in the country and I count on him to continue working with the vision and dedication that characterizes him”.

María Jesús Almazor, a Barcelona-based telecommunications engineer, has developed her entire professional career at Telefónica, with more than 25 years of experience. Initially, she worked in the operations division of Telefónica, optimizing Movistar’s mobile network, to later assume other responsibilities in the commercial area of the company. In 2018 she was director of the Southern Territory of Telefónica and, since January of that year, she was appointed CEO of Telefónica Spain, a position she has held until she joined the group.

According to telecommunications sources, Telefónica Tech’s Cloud and Cybersecurity services, now integrated into the Telefónica Cybersecurity & Cloud Tech division, have grown at double digits in recent years due to their great strength and recognition in the market. Both businesses have been key in the transformation and adaptation of companies to the new post-COVID-19 reality and present significant potential for future growth”. The same sources point out that “the integration of both businesses will allow us to accompany our B2B client in a multi-cloud environment with security as an essential attribute and offer a fully integrated and simplified Cloud and Cybersecurity value proposition”.

For José Cerdán, CEO of Telefónica Tech, “Telefónica Tech is a story of success and growth. Now, Telefónica Tech faces the great challenge of the Tech businesses continuing to grow in a sustained and differential manner above what the market does “, helping to capture the opportunity of the B2B segment for the Telefónica Group. The strategic unit will serve the more than 5.5 million B2B clients of the Telefónica Group.”

Just a few weeks ago, Gayo himself announced the first movements of this reorganization within Telefónica Spain, with the appointment of Pedro Serrahima as director of Multi-brand, Experience and Customer Policies; and with Sergio Sánchez in charge of the sales channels or the creation, among other novelties, of a Transformation and European Funds department, led by Marisa de Urquía.

Regarding Almazor, Emilio Gayo thanked “her dedication, her immense commitment and her exemplary work all these years as CEO of Telefónica Spain. Through her, we have achieved very relevant achievements and transformed this company into a more agile and efficient organization. We owe all of this, to a large extent, to her. Without a doubt, the group will take advantage of and grow with her talent and the deep knowledge of the business that María Jesús has always shown”, he concludes.
