Tell me what beer you drink and I’ll tell you where you’re from: the map with the favorite beers in all of Spain

That Spain is a country with a beer tradition is unquestionable. With an average consumption of 52 liters per year for each Spaniard, however, there are hundreds of brands and varieties that make it difficult to decide which beer to drink. For this reason, Kantar has decided to carry out a study where the favorite firm of each autonomous community is shown.

Despite the fact that 2020 was a year purely marked by the covid-19 pandemic and that it brought about a change in the way of consuming beer, transferred from bars to homes, the preferences of Spaniards hardly changed (it only changed in Extremadura , compared to 2019). This is highlighted by the one that the consultant Kantar carries out annually with the Spanish brands of the golden liquid.

In this way, there are eight beers that predominate among Spaniards according to their region of origin. Eight brands that show the enormous range of the national scene and are characterized, in most cases, for being beers very established in that region both culturally and historically.

The Mahou-San Miguel group is the undisputed king due to its two great bastions

This is Mahou, the beer that is most drunk in Spain and that dominates up to five of the 17 Autonomous Communities of Madrid, so its consumption in the capital is very high above the rest, its influence also reaches Castile and León, Castilla-La Mancha, Asturias and the Balearic Islands.

His partner in the same San Miguel group continues after this. With representation in up to four regions, Cantabria, the Basque Country, Navarra and the Canary Islands, despite being of Malacitan origin, there is no doubt that its presence has settled more in the national north, as well as abroad where it is also very strong.

Closes the podium and also present in more than one autonomy, already being the only one together with the two previous ones that achieves it, Amstel. Natural from the Netherlands, being the only one that is not typical of Spain, its consumption is the highest in the Valencian Community and Extremadura. The latter is precisely the only region that changes compared to 2019.

And he does it after Cruzcampo, the unquestionable queen of Andalusia. Based in Seville, this brand loses to Extremadura but continues with a very personified Andalusian power and recognized throughout the country. A similar effect, although not as strong as the one that occurs in Galicia (Estrella Galicia), Aragón (Ambar), Catalonia (Estrella Damm) and the Region of Murcia (Estrella del Levante). Finally, in La Rioja, as was the case in 2019, Kantar reflects that the samples taken do not allow establishing which is the most chosen brand.
