The DGT will prohibit emergency triangles: why, when will it come into force and how will it be replaced?

The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) continues its . With the aim of continuing to reduce road accidents and the fatalities they cause, it has implemented several measures that will come into force as of 2021. Among them, the prohibition of using , both classic and dangerous due to their placement in middle of a road with fast traffic. It will be for this reason that from this same year the substitutes of this historical article of every trunk of a car will begin to be seen.

“The remedy is worse than the disease.” More or less in this style are the shots for which the DGT plans to eliminate the emergency triangles from Spanish circulation.

Because?

The agency has been detecting that, on many occasions, its placement on the shoulder of a motorway or dual carriageway causes serious incidents that can lead to collisions with the driver of the damaged vehicle or collisions with other cars for trying to avoid the driver.

For this reason, it has already launched the plan to eliminate this element from circulation and thus put an end to the outdated mechanism of putting on the reflective vest, getting out of the vehicle, opening the trunk and taking the triangles 50 meters away from the stopped car.

When will it go into effect?

Although throughout 2021 the new devices that will replace the triangles will begin to be seen, it will not be prohibited to place them in an emergency until January 2024.

Of course, although from this month of April there will already be a substitute, being able to share the cabin with the triangles, in the event of an accident only one of the two can be placed.

What is the substitute?

As simple as the V16 emergency lights. A device similar to the one that the secret police place on the hood of a vehicle when it activates its siren, which in a few days it will be possible to start buying and using it on the road.

The V16s do not require getting out of the vehicle to put them on and their implementation is as easy as taking your arm out of the window and sticking them on the hood. In this way, and once they are turned on, they have a radius of action of 1 kilometer even in low visibility conditions.

By January 2024, already required to be carried in every vehicle, preferably in the glove compartment, these emergency lights will put an end to the triangles that sometimes create more dangers than they can help to avoid.
