The Ñ, doubts about said domain

Hello,

The use of domains with the consonant “ñ” is not an exclusive problem of a browser, a server or a certain Hosting, it is a global problem.

To link domains with ç or ñ characters to our hosting, you must enter the converted domain in IDN (international) format.

You can do this by visiting the following link:

For example the domain caçadors.com becomes xn--caadors-vxa.com

This other example is real from a client of our Hosting:

When contracting the hosting, he requested it for xn--iesmartinezmontaes-20b.es

These domains with Ñ have existed in Spain since November 2007, since the RAE presented multilingual domains (those that include graphic signs of languages other than English).

Red.es is the Spanish organization in charge of managing .es domains, and the first in the world to allow the registration of multilingual domains.

Faced with the advantages of using domains with “Ñ” I propose two drawbacks:

  • Abroad they will not be able to write the URL with Ñ
  • Some mail clients like Outlook, Yahoo, Windows Mail, Gmail, etc. they give problems in the management of suffixes that contain the “ñ” between their characters (logically coming from the domain) and not all of them have worked correctly using a domain with Ñ. Windows Mail and Gmail still don’t work properly when sending an email to an address with a domain that contains the e.

Like everything in life, it has its advantages and disadvantages, it is a matter of evaluating alternatives before considering registering a domain with these types of characters.
