Why a new Mastercard logo

The company’s CMO, Raja Rajamannar, spoke to about the new MasterCard logo, which is the result of an attempt at modernization, flexibility and optimization for the web.

What is the new MasterCard logo like?

The new MasterCard logo retains the most recognizable elements of the brand: the two interlocking circles, and the colors red and yellow.

In the old logo, the word MasterCard was placed on top of the interlocking circles. In the new one, the word is outside the circles. A change that does more flexible, since it can be represented both horizontally and vertically. In addition, the letters M and C, which were capital letters in the old logo, blend in with the rest of the letters in the new one, and all appear in lowercase. A visual nod to the evolution of payment, which is what the brand wants to arouse in the public.

As for the font chosen for the name of MasterCard, it is a font called FF Mark, Chosen for its sleek, modern look and because it reads well at small sizes. In addition, its circular lines are adapted to the system created for the brand. The all-over design will appear on all MasterCard credit cards and billboards, with the circles and arcs playing that essential role.

According to Rajamannar he would have previously considered a more radical option for the new logoin which the word MasterCard disappeared, and using only the two interlocking circles. “The image is so recognizable that the approach could have worked”Rajamannar said. But for now the company has played a little safer and wanted keep the brand with the name.
