These are the new Renfe and BBVA credit cards: points and discounts for train users

BBVA and Renfe have reached an agreement to launch a new range of credit cards, Renfe Mastercard, linked to its free Más Renfe Loyalty Program. These new cards allow for the payment of purchases in any store, as well as benefits in the purchase of tickets.

All Renfe Mastercard credit card holders will obtain Renfe Points for their use, and they can be exchanged for AVE, Long Distance, Avant, Media Distancia or Cercanías tickets, for any time and date, as well as for the services offered by partner companies, for example, hotel stays or car rental. Likewise, they will be able to obtain Renfe Points as “welcome” and “permanence” as credit card holders.

The Renfe Mastercard card has three levels available with different functionalities: ‘Renfe Mastercard’, ‘Renfe Mastercard Viaja’ and ‘Renfe Mastercard Discover’. On the one hand, the ‘classic’ version offers great payment flexibility, is complemented by two free BBVA insurances (robbery at ATMs and travel accidents), and has no issuance fee or annual fee.

On the other hand, there are two premium versions: the ‘Viaja’ card and the ‘Descubre’ card, with a scheme for obtaining Renfe Points and superior discounts, travel assistance insurance, and added Mastercard benefits. In addition, the holders of these cards will be able to benefit from a 5% discount on the purchase of their AVE and Long Distance tickets.

How to redeem Renfe points

Renfe points can be used to travel for free on Ave, Larga Distancia, Media Distancia, Avant and Cercanías/Rodalies trains. However, split payment of a ticket is not allowed. That is, part with points and part in euros. Therefore, you must have a number of points at least equal to the price of the ticket.
