These are the smart contact lenses that bring science fiction to the real world

We’ve seen them in hundreds of science fiction movies and soon we’ll be able to do it in person: smart contact lenses are now a reality. This invention, designed and brought to life by Mojo Vision, adds a layer of artificial imagery to its wearer’s vision and has the potential to change the future of technology and our lives.

Although it is still a prototype and its impact on long-term visual health needs to be tested, the Mojo Lens is designed like any other contact lens. The difference is that these incorporate a MicroLED screen with 14,000 pixels per inch, with a diameter of less than 0.5 mm and a distance between points of 1.8 microns, which makes it the smallest and densest ever created for this use. .

Likewise, the company has developed specific integrated circuits that have a processing unit with a 5 GHz frequency that collects data from the lens sensors and sends the augmented reality content to the MicroLED screen. In order to track the constant movement of your eyes and add that layer of information, Mojo Vision has created a custom configured accelerometer, gyroscope and magnetometer. These smart contact lenses have their own energy management system, made up of medical-grade micro-batteries and an integrated circuit.

As for its control, it is carried out through a unique and intuitive interface that allows its wearers to access and select content only with the natural movement of the eyes, without the need to use their hands.

For the company, founded in 2015, the creation of this prototype is the test base that will allow them to test the capacity of the Mojo Lens and its software, with the aim of perfecting them and presenting them to the US FDA. In the company’s words, “we hope that the Mojo Lens will change the lives of people with vision problems by improving their ability to perform everyday tasks that many of us take for granted.”

If commercialized, the possibilities of this invention are truly revolutionary. It would mean having access to unlimited information at all times, from maps of unknown cities to consulting text messages or following a tutorial without the physical barrier of an external screen, as in the case of mobile phones. However, for now we will have to wait.
