In recent years, the home shopping trend has increased exponentially due to the Covid-19 pandemic. As a result, this has generated a great boost for the different delivery platforms that have been gaining strength for some years in Spain, both national and foreign.

An example of this is the Turkish company getirwhich has consolidated its business under an ultra-fast delivery model, and has recently closed one worth $768 million, about 698 million euros. It has been led by the investment company Mubadala, along with the participation of Alpha Wave Global, Sequoia Capital, TigerGlobal and the Abu Dhabi Global Investment Fund (ADG). With this, it has managed to reach a valuation of $12,000 million, about 10,900 million euros, becoming a new decacorn (startups with a valuation of more than $10,000M).

What is Getir

As we have already mentioned, Getir is a Turkish company that offers food delivery solutions, and other types of products within urban areas in a minimum time.

Founded in 2015 in the city of Istanbul by: Nazim Salur (founder of BiTaksi), Serkan Borancili (founder of GittiGidiyor) and tuncay tutek (former executive of Procter & Gamble and PepsiCo in Europe and the Middle East). It is considered as one of the pioneer companies in the ultra-fast delivery service, that is, 10 minutes or less. A service offer that has led it to maintain constant growth, currently having more than 30,000 employees in 9 different countries.

Beyond its delivery times, another of the company’s distinctive characteristics is with respect to its distributors. These move exclusively on motorcycles or electric bicycles provided by the company, together with its corresponding protection material. Likewise, the delivery men do not work as freelancers, but under contract, either for an indefinite period of time or part-time, which allows them to properly adapt to the new delivery laws implemented in Spain.

Their working hours are between 8:00 (weekdays) or 9:00 (weekends) and 00:00 (weekdays) or 2:00 (weekends).

An internationalization process with scale in Spain

Despite having a track record of 6 years, its internationalization process did not begin until last 2021, when it began its expansion strategy in Europe and the United States. Its first step towards internationalization took place in January of last year, to then jump to the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Spain (September 2021), Portugal and finally the United States.

In Spain, its service is available in MMadrid, Barcelona, ​​Valencia, Zaragoza and Seville, which join more than 40 different cities between Europe and America, where the application offers its services. Likewise, it has an estimated 1,500 product references in its catalogue. In addition, it also has other services apart from food shopping and restaurant delivery, but these are only available in Turkey. Such as: delivery of drinking water, and a mobility service through taxis.
