Indian health authorities have recorded nearly 9,000 deaths from black fungus, a fungal infection that is growing among recovered Covid-19 patients. Doctors who treat these patients explained to the BBC that the symptoms usually appear between 12 and 18 days after the patient recovers from Covid-19.
Officially known as mucormycosis, it is a fungal infection of the sinuses, brain, or lungs that is contracted when fungal spores are inhaled from the air. Thus, the Indian health authorities have explained that it is not a disease directly related to Covid-19. However, doctors have explained to the same medium that there is a relationship with the steroids used to treat Covid-19.
Its symptoms are itchy eyes and/or nose, headache, fever, vomiting blood and difficulty breathing, in addition to altering the mental status of patients who contract it. Thus, some recommendations to prevent the appearance of this infection is to maintain adequate hygiene, use a mask or protect the whole body when gardening.
The appearance of this symptomatology usually occurs mainly in people with a weakened immune system. For this reason, doctors understand that the use of steroids in the treatment of Covid-19 infection may be the cause of the high incidence among recovered from coronavirus. People who have recently received an organ transplant or have spent a long time in the ICU may also be more susceptible to this infection. In addition, the incidence is very high in diabetics who do not have the disease controlled.
