This is the complement of 392 euros per child in retirement pensions, widowhood…

The gender gap is a structural problem and the fight to reduce and eliminate it covers multiple fronts, including the Social Security pension system. It is for this reason that certain supplements destined almost mostly for women are paid to compensate for the possible damages of motherhood in their working career.

It is what is known as a supplement to reduce the gender gap, the previous maternity supplement to improve coverage for these women (from the first child and not from the second, as before the reform) who, during pregnancy and breastfeeding, their professional careers are interrupted with the damage that this entails in terms of employment and contributions.

The supplement is made up of a monthly extra per child that is added to the contributory pension. It does not only apply to retirement pensions, since it is also valid for widowhood or permanent disability pensions. Like most of these benefits, it is also paid in 14 monthly installments.

For the time being, this measure will be indefinite. In accordance with what was established by the Government at the time of announcing the changes, the intention is to abolish the complement when the gender gap is below 5%. According to the calculations of the Executive published at the beginning of March, the gap is currently at 19%.

Not all people will receive the supplement to reduce the gender gap, since people who previously received the maternity supplement continue to receive it under the same conditions: the new supplement to reduce the gender gap will be paid in the pensions generated from on February 4, 2021, when the reform of the aforementioned supplement came into force.

The amounts per son or daughter of the supplement to reduce the gender gap are as follows:

-For a child: 28 euros per month and 392 euros per year.

-For two children: 56 euros per month and 784 euros per year.

Requirements to collect the supplement to reduce the gender gap

The beneficiaries are asked several requirements:

-Be attached to a Social Security scheme and apply for a contributory pension (retirement, widowhood or permanent disability).

-Have at least one son or daughter registered in the Civil Registry.

Although 94% of the beneficiaries of the supplement to reduce the gender gap are women, men can also receive it if they prove that their professional career was harmed. To do so, they must meet the following requirements:

-In births prior to 1995, at least 120 days of absence of contributions must be demonstrated between the nine months prior to the birth and the following three years.

-In births after 1995, it must be shown that the sum of the contribution bases for the 24 months after the birth is at least 15% lower than the sum of the contribution bases for the previous 24 months.

However, in the event that both parents have the right to collect the supplement, it will always go to the parent with the least amount of pension.
