However, for some time it has been observed how the application had been lagging a bit behind in terms of its functions, compared to some of its competitors such as . Something that has changed in recent months, when, in April 2022, the messaging launched a new function called Communities.
Although this function is still in its testing phase for the time being, WhatsApp has just announced that is expanding the number of users who can access it. However, the platform has not wanted to specify in which countries and exactly how many people will be able to enjoy Communities while this first phase continues to be developed.
This is Communities, the WhatsApp function designed to manage groups
According to , this new function arose in response to user demand for a more efficient way of communicate and coordinate within their communities.
As its name indicates, this new tool allows WhatsApp users to bring together different groups that have a certain relationship with each other under the same structure. In other words, based on this new function we will be able to create groups of groups within the application, a functionality that can greatly facilitate communication management within certain communities, such as schools, residences, etc.
As the same company explains, “Schools, local clubs, and nonprofits use WhatsApp to communicate securely and get results, especially since the pandemic has forced us all to find creative ways to work together remotely. Given the outpouring of feedback we’ve received, we feel we can do even more to make it easier to manage these busy group conversations.”
How Communities works
By keeping the various groups under the same structure, Communities proposes a more controlled and organized management of these groups. In this way, users can receive general updates sent to all groups and carry out private conversations in each of them, according to their interests.
Likewise, the figure that will have the most power will be the administrators. These will have ability to advertise Y delimit with which groups to share the information. The announcements are made through the main group, which has the capacity to support thousands of users. For their part, ordinary users can chat in the different community subgroupswhich will be smaller and will not necessarily include the same people.
It should be noted that the Communities are not visible or public, a user can only access them by invitation. Regarding privacy, it is expected that soon it will be possible to hide your phone number from other users. Function that, for example, in Telegram has already been available for a while.
On the other hand, Communities integrates other functionalities and general improvements that have already been adapted in WhatsApp chats and groups:
