An expedition to the Titanic is prepared and admits passengers

The OceanGate Expeditions team prepares an epic journey to see the remains of the Titanic, almost 4,000 meters deep, and offers the opportunity to participate in the most exclusive adventure in the world.

Only 250 people have so far seen the remains of the RMS Titanic in situ, physically, since its wreckage was discovered in 1985. That’s far fewer than the number of people who have traveled into space. Now, the OceanGate Expeditions company is organizing a very special expedition that will integrate private participants on a trip to the bottom of the North Atlantic, at a depth of 3,800 meters, to see in person the remains of the Titanic, the most famous shipwreck in the world, and the field of surrounding debris. It is a unique opportunity to inspect the aftermath of the tragedy and witness the ravages of time caused by the pressure, salt water and microbes that have been devouring the steel case for a century.

The OceanGate Expeditions crew, together with a team of scientists, marine biologists, archaeologists, Titanic experts and various specialists, made history in 2021 by successfully completing several dives on the Titan, in the only five-crew deep-sea submersible that exists in the world.

It is the result of many years of work. The company has spent six years designing, developing and testing the Titan, the world’s most advanced submersible, and plans to resume work on the Titanic wreck this summer. And he is going to do it in the company of a handful of adventurers ¬–Citizen Explorers– who will cover the price of their tickets (250,000 dollars) for the scientific expedition, which has now become the most exclusive experiential trip in the world.

The expedition will depart in the summer

The date of the expedition is yet to be determined, but it will be this summer, and it will depart from St John’s Newfoundland, an island off the Atlantic coast of Canada, on an eight-day voyage that will take 380 miles (just over a thousand kilometers) out to sea and 3,800 meters underwater.

Participants will receive hands-on training prior to the expedition as they will be an active part of the crew as well as the team working in the area documenting the condition of the wreck and debris field before it is gone forever. It’s not imminent, but it’s possible the ship’s hull and structure could collapse in the next 40 years, due to pressure and corrosion, according to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The moment the Titan submerged.

The expedition will be conducted as a series of eight-day missions beginning and ending in St. John’s Newfoundland, with six “civilian” crew members each. And it is planned that up to five submersible dives can be carried out in each mission, so that no one is left without experiencing the dive, even if the weather conditions were unfavorable.

During the dive, the submersible will glide over the deck of the Titanic using its powerful exterior lights to illuminate the cavern where the Grand Staircase once stood and the remains of the iconic bridge from which the order to stop the engines was given. They will also be able to explore the massive Titanic debris field to observe and record the variety of artifacts scattered across the ocean floor.

Seats for companions

The available places are limited, and access to the expedition is done with a previous selection of candidates. To do this, you just have to submit an application, enabled on the OceanGate Expeditions website, and meet some not very demanding requirements, such as being of legal age and knowing how to drive a zodiac, yes, in rough seas. The rest of the practical training is provided by the company, a training that will allow participants to work side by side with explorers, experts and scientists to experience a true scientific adventure.

Once OceanGate Expeditions has reviewed the applications, a representative will schedule an interview via video conferencing platform. If you pass the interview, you will be offered a position as a crew member and the company will announce the dates to begin mission readiness training. If space is available, the companions of the chosen members can also join the expedition and participate in the adventure, with the exception of the dive. Companions must also apply to join and be vetted by the expedition team.
