Catalonia exceeds 7,000 companies that have fled since the beginning of the ‘procés’

Data from the Mercantile Registry for the last four years show that Catalonia has lost a total of 7,007 companies in this time, which have decided to leave the region to settle elsewhere in Spain. In this time, the community has managed to attract 2,509 companies from other parts of the country, which places the negative balance of these four years at 4,498 companies.

This is reflected in the quarterly data published by the College of Registrars of Spain and, according to its report for the last quarter of 2020, the exit of Catalan companies is accelerating.

In this way, among the communities from which companies leave, Madrid shows 1,231 exits, followed by Catalonia, with 666, Valencian Community, 403 and Andalusia, 402. However, if the balance of entries and exits is compared, Madrid stands out with a positive balance of 147 companies, while Catalonia shows a negative balance of 150. The rest of the communities show greater diversity in the data. Among those with more activity, Andalusia shows a positive balance of 88 companies, and the Valencian Community a negative balance of 65 companies.

from Catalonia to Madrid since 2017, there are Gas Natural, Naturgy Energy Group and Naturgy Iberia SA, Endesa Distribución Eléctrica, Vida-Caixa, Mitsubishi Electric, Torraspapel, Manpower, Abertis Infraestructuras and Abertis Autopistas, Servihabitat, Catalana Occidente and Ricoh.

For their part, capital increases in Spain fell by 14.6% in January, compared to the same period of the previous year. By communities, those with the highest volume of activity are Madrid with 786 operations, 17.4% less than the same month of the previous year, and Catalonia with 614, which reaches up to 18.8% less.

The report records decreases in almost all communities, especially in Castilla-La Mancha (-44.8%), followed by the Balearic Islands (-41.3%), Ceuta and Melilla (-40.0%). On the other hand, only the constitutions increased in Galicia (15.1%), Navarra (9.3%), Murcia (8.2%) and Andalusia (2.2%).

Plant of independence

A piece of paper with five pro-independence firms may have more influence than all the PSOE concessions to ERC in exchange for its support for the 2021 General State Budgets (PGE), despite the fact that the weight of the planned investment for Catalonia in the State Accounts current recovers levels not reached for a decade, with 16.5% of the total territorialized funds. The investment thus rises in absolute terms to 1,999.30 million euros, with an annual increase of 48%.

The figure has not been seen since the 2,548 million euros that the State allocated to Catalonia in 2011. They then accounted for 15.2% of the total real investment budgeted for regionalization, they are the highest total figure in the last decade. For the independentists, this figure still does not comply with the provisions of the third additional provision of the Statute, which establishes that state spending on infrastructure for the community must be equivalent to the weight of the Catalan economy in that of the country as a whole.

The Republicans have joined Junts, the CUP and PDeCat to sign a pre-electoral commitment at the gates of the regional elections this Sunday, February 14: “Whatever the correlation of forces that emerges from the polls, in no case will the formation government with the PSC” in Catalonia.

The ‘Generalitat’ maintains that there are still “pending commitments” of 9,200 million

And it is that, either in the campaign or during the legislature, for the outgoing Government, the State is far from responding to the budgetary needs of Catalonia. On the one hand, they reproach that the budgets never come true, since the actual level of execution is much lower than expected. In addition, the Generalitat maintains on the table an invoice of “pending commitments” by the central government that exceeds 9,200 million according to the latest update of the Catalan Executive, which dates from 2019.

They also claim more weight in the EU Restructuring Fund, where Catalonia occupies the second position in the regional distribution. However, in terms of population, it is the autonomous community that has benefited the most from European aid.

Catalonia, with a population of 7.5 million inhabitants, has been the autonomous community that has benefited the most, receiving 1,706 million (17.1%) from the React-EU fund. On the contrary, Madrid, with a population of 6.6 million inhabitants, has obtained 1,284 million (12.8%).

Andalusia, with a population of 8.4 million inhabitants, will receive 1,881 million euros (18.8%). As for the Valencian Community, with a population of 4.9 million inhabitants, it will receive 1,254 million (12.5%), as reported by the ministry in a statement. The resources from React-EU are intended to finance the impact suffered in the fields of education, health and social services as a result of the pandemic. Likewise, they intend to promote a change in the production model to achieve sustainable and inclusive growth, as well as promote the ecological and digital transition, social and territorial cohesion and equality.
