My name is Lucas, I am a photographer and director of BAUMM, we make backpacks made with reused paragliders.

We started in 2005, with a friend, on a trip we discovered that there was a whole design that was based on the reuse of materials. In Argentina nothing was known about that yet. When we got here, we said: how can we transform or recreate that idea? And we discovered that here tons of waste was generated in advertising and with billboards.

After 4 years we found the limit of the material and decided to stop working on it.

In 2009 we discovered this new material, talking to a pilot, who told us that the paraglider flies around 300 hours and then it is no longer used, due to a matter of trial and error.

The fabric is practically new, not to fly, but to be reused in another product. So we started testing. We chose the material to make backpacks because it gives us the opportunity to have super light, super resistant and super colorful backpacks that can be made very small and that have with them all the adventure and adrenaline of man fulfilling the dream of flying.

The backpack you use was in Patagonia, in the middle of the hills, in the mountains, sun, rain, wind, birds and then you use it in the middle of the city and in that we find the best of the material.

From when the paraglider is flying until it becomes a backpack, there are a lot of steps that practically all of us do in the workshop. We open it, we cut it, we wash it, we catalog it by color.

I take care of the composition, making the color palettes that we want to make, which in turn are subject to the gliders that have been flown. They are usually strong colors. Reds, fluo yellows, violets, fuchsia, etc.

All that adventure that the material has, we try to channel it at the moment we work, we accompany it with good music and we work in this kind of workshop house where we try to have a harmony and a heart in the production process that we are convinced of. which is transferred to the final product.

That is why what is consumed is also important, because all that stuff behind a product, a bad production path, is inevitably in the final product.

The interesting thing is to reuse and take advantage of a material and a technology that is designed for a universe, with all its costs (it is a very expensive material that we could not use to make backpacks) by reusing it we take advantage of that economy that exists and insert it into a more small that backpacks are and we take advantage of all the technology and all the quality that this fabric gives, which we could not obtain in any other way.

Being part of the category of sustainable products opens many doors for you. I believe that it should not be a category in itself, but rather it should be a trend of brands in general to have a more respectful job with the environment, with their employees and in the same way it would be good if the consumer already has an educated head to consume responsibly.

We are after new points of sale and at the same time we are facing new designs, we want to renew the classic models. When 2018 began, we had contact again from Belgium and Berlin, from people who had been interested a few years ago and we are going to see if we can start to firmly project a market abroad this year.

My advice for those who want to develop their online business is to have good product photographs, not necessarily professional ones, but rather ones that convey the soul of their creator and their product.

And then, take advantage of the context we have today where practically all the tools are within reach and there are a lot of tutorials, including Tiendanube, all the time they are making new tutorials and giving good ideas to have an online store. And a lot of work, because you really have to be on top of it and keep the enterprise alive, showing what happens.

And it is also very important to show the process, it is very enriching, not only the final product but also the context in which you do it. Telling the previous story of what you are doing always brings you closer to a potential consumer.
