Passive prefabricated houses or with the passivhaus seal: the next step in a growing sector

The coronavirus pandemic has meant one of the prefabricated houses that sees its interior grow and innovations such as those or the shelter are produced. Well, it is precisely from California that a new aspect of the business comes from where the sector is focusing: adding prefabricated houses and the Passivhaus seal.

What is a passivhaus house?

A passivhaus building is a type of construction that prioritizes the maximum reduction of the energy necessary for its air conditioning, managing to maintain a healthy interior environment and a constant and comfortable temperature throughout the year by optimizing existing resources.

This is a construction method of German origin that originated in 1991 and that organizations such as try to implement in Spain. In our country examples of this type of construction are the highest in the world or an urbanization.

California-based Plant Prefab, the country’s first Certified B Corporation prefab design-build company, has launched its first three LivingHomes passive houses, which have been designed in association with Richard Pedranti Architect.

With a size that varies between 200 and 300 square meters and from three to four bedrooms, the LivingHomes models present a modern and timeless design. Thus, alternatives 1 and 2 feature sloped roofs, optimized for photovoltaic panels, which create cozy living spaces. And the Model 3 has a distinctly Californian design, inspired by mid-century case study homes. Additionally, all versions offer open-plan living areas with large, expressive windows.

In addition, the construction of all the LivingHomes models of the Californian company are done efficiently with the use of the Plant Building System, a hybrid system patented by Plant Prefab to build prefabricated houses. It is a panel construction method, which incorporates plumbing, electrical and finishing materials. By integrating both modules and panels, PBS gives architects greater design flexibility and reduces the complexity and cost of transportation and installation.
