The war in Ukraine causes an ERTE in Valeo-Martos

The Valeo company has agreed an ERTE with the works council of its Martos (Jaén) plant “caused by the lack of components from Ukraine”, as explained by the workers’ representatives in a note. Valeo, with more than 3,000 direct jobs, manufactures lighting systems for the main automotive brands in Martos, it is the main industry in the province of Jaén and supports a powerful auxiliary industry around plastic.

The ERTE and the drop in production at Valeo can have chain consequences not only for its auxiliaries, but for the entire automobile industry it supplies.

The ERTE will apply for a maximum of twenty working days until May 31, 2022, with 100% of the collection of extraordinary payments and total absence of vacation generation. Valeo will supplement 15% of the basic salary, connection salary, punctuality and attendance concepts, up to a maximum of 85%. This, in addition to 70% of the contribution base paid by the State Public Employment Service (SEPE), with established maximum limits. No worker will receive less than 60% of their base salary plus linkage salary.

“In the entire sector there is a lack of components. First it is adjusted with temporary and then with short ERTE in good conditions. It is the third that is done in a year and a bit, with twenty days affected per worker. The factory is not going to stop , it is a flexibility measure so as not to fire anyone because it slows down their production”, explained Rafael Dorante, from FICA-UGT.

The document issued by the committee shows its rejection of the war in Ukraine.

On the other hand, the Provincial Association of Builders and Promoters of Jaén has proposed to the administrations “a revision of the prices” in the works tendered before the “unbearable” escalation that they suffer in raw materials and energy. This was indicated this Monday by the president and the general secretary of the organization, Francisco Chamorro and José Ángel Mesa, to questions from journalists about the possible effect of the war in Ukraine after the invasion of Russia.

“It is already being noticed and it seems that suppliers, especially of aluminum that is being manufactured in Ukraine, are already commenting that it is going to have another rise of another 30 percent. It is going to have an impact on another price increase,” he said. asserted about this Chamorro conflict, who added that the situation also affects the rise in energy prices.

In this sense, he recalled that the sector has already been affected by the covid-19 crisis and in early 2021 “a very high price increase in raw materials” was detected, on which they are “claiming what solution they can have these increases that had an impact on the works that were tendered in 2020”.

A scenario that is causing problems, as explained by Mesa, who has given two examples “in Jaén capital without going any further”: the construction of two buildings on the Las Lagunillas Campus of the UJA and the Higher Conservatory of Music, where ” maybe there is a person working, when there should be intense activity. “Why? Because a revision of the prices is being negotiated with the different administrations because it is unbearable”, he said. The general secretary has pointed out as an example that “the brick is twice the price of what was tendered at the time” and to this is added the increase in the price of diesel and electricity.
