In fact, beyond surviving, has managed to become one of the great referenceshowever, that of Amazon continues to advance while the German giant seeks to face it, and one of the bets is to increase Zalando’s distribution network.
The new Zalando logistics center will be in Spain
Spain will be the place where the expansion of Zalando’s distribution network will continue, since this year it will begin to build its first logistics center on the Iberian Peninsula, and it is expected to be fully operational during the first half of 2021.
“This year we will continue with our investments to increase our European logistics network. Today we announce our plan to open a new local warehouse in Spain.” announced , one of the CEOs of Zalando. “Spain is one of the biggest fashion markets in Europe, and we have seen strong growth there in recent months.”
Although the German firm has not provided more details about this new logistics warehouse, such as its size, investment, the multinational plans to locate it “near Madrid”.
So far, Zalando had a simple warehouse in Barcelona, from where it centralized all Spanish shipments through Celeritas. Orders are currently processed in large logistics centers (such as the one that will open in Madrid), where employees manually select the items and then pack them. Once the package is ready, an email is sent informing you that the order has left the logistics center. 2 to 3 days later, the order arrives at the warehouse in Barcelona and Celeritas is then in charge of making the delivery to the customer’s address.
Currently, the shipping process takes between 5 to 7 business days, which is expected to change with the opening of the new logistics center in Madrid, bringing delivery times closer to 2/4 days, for example, the company takes to deliver orders in Germany.
This is the Zalando distribution network
The one in Spain will be Zalando’s thirteenth distribution center, which will belong to a network that has approximately 31 million customers in 17 European markets. Its logistics system is thinking of providing each and every consumer with a convenient and reliable service day after day.
But not only in Spain will a new Zalando distribution center be opened, since the German company plans to open another 4 new logistics centers soonas we can see in the following map in which, in addition to appearing in its centers in Europe, the following are also shown to open soon: Verona (Italy), Gluchow (), Ludwigsfelde (Germany) and Rotterdam (The Netherlands).
Each of these logistics centers manage hundreds and thousands of packages every day: thousands of employees in these structures that consist of hundreds of thousands of square meters in which technology and human service come together to offer a fast, functional and high-quality logistics service.
Zalando’s distribution centers are characterized by have a high level of automation.
Among these systems, its system of barcode scanningas the products ordered by consumers are sent by employees through a belt at a staggering speed of 1.4 meters per second to be classified, while an automated barcode reader is able to read these codes regardless of their position, size, or shape, as you can see in the following video.
This technology is so fast that it can read about 140 images per second with an accuracy ranging from 95% to 98%, considerably improving the time taken to integrate the order and send it.
Until now, Zalando has four stores in Germany, three in Poland, two in Italy, one in Sweden, one in and one more in the Netherlands.
