This is the new energy efficiency label: refrigerators and washing machines say goodbye to A +++ in March

The new year is bringing many changes with it, especially when it comes to caring for the environment. A key aspect for the European Union (EU) and for which it has been studying the classic energy efficiency labeling of household appliances for some time. A sticker that had become outdated in the face of the new models and that in March will have a new classification that will be extended to all components until 2022.

Goodbye to A+++. In recent years it has been customary for every new washing machine, refrigerator, dishwasher or air conditioner to be accompanied by a sticker with that classification in dark green. The EU, faced with the need to update this labeling (created in 1994) that introduces the energy expenditure of the products, has decided to become more serious and harden the ranges that will now go from G (greatest expense) to A (least). , instead of D to A+++.

Dishwashers, washing machines, refrigerators and devices with electronic screens will be the first to take the step

It will be from March 1, 2021 when dishwashers, washing machines, refrigerators and devices with electronic screens will be the first to take the step. Moving all those appliances up to now at the top to category C, for now there will be almost no B and no A to leave room for future innovation, the traditional colors will be maintained and all the new products in the store will go from that category. C to ‘G’, which will be rare to see due to its excessive expense.

In addition, the EU will force lighting systems to adopt the new labeling in September, which will be decisive at the beginning of 2022 with air conditioners and dryers, the last to take the step. All with a two-week transition period, in which manufacturers and sellers must update their new appliances, the old ones will continue to maintain the classic sticker.

More information

Alongside the new letter, which will not be revised until 30% of new products are A or 50% A or B, the EU has also introduced new information on the labels. This refers to data on the water used per wash cycle, storage capacity or noise, among others. In addition, they will include a QR code that users can scan to obtain additional information about the product.

This code will be the main novelty and will lead directly to the , where information will appear from the aforementioned March 1, 2021.

Finally, there will be small variations depending on the type of appliance as well as a new calculation method, so there could initially be similar products with a different annual consumption. Be that as it may, sellers will also be obliged to supply the product information sheets in electronic format to make the new labeling more understandable.
