The CNMC has just published its , which gives us very valuable information about the current situation in this sector and the companies that play a leading role in it.

It is a very complete report, which focuses on both the activity of the traditional postal sector (SPT) and that of the courier and parcel sector (CEP). However, we have decided to focus on the latter, since it is the one in which the world of eCommerce is framed.

The 23 operating companies of the CEP segment analyzed in the study were those that in 2021 had 50 or more workers on average. They are the following:

Turnover of CEP operators rises in 2021

If we take into account the total turnover of these companies, we appreciate that this was 8,556.2 million euros in 2021. However, this includes all the services offered by these operators, not only eCommerce deliveries. Therefore, the specific data of the income coming from products of this segment (messaging and parcel) were located in the 6,463.3 million euros, increasing the figure by 39.8% compared to 2020.

This was due to the 1,087.3 million shipments made in 2021, a figure that doubled that reached the previous year, growing by 59.4%.

Focusing on the type of operator, the report reveals that the turnover of public operators (Post and Express Post) grew 5.2% in 2021, reaching 2,054.2 million euros. And breaking down these data further, we see that Correos experienced a higher rise (+6.1%), standing at 1,680.3 million euros, compared to Correos Express, which reached 373.9 million euros (+1.2%).

Post continue to reign from the most prominent position, and amazon emerges as the second postal operator with the best business figures. It is the first time that the CNMC has taken the eCommerce giant into account in this classification, after determining in 2020 that Amazon Spain Fulfillment SL (ASF) and Amazon Road Transport Spain SL (ARTS), have the status of postal operators. Other companies that have also received good news in 2021 were Hispapost, which presented the highest increase of all (+164.5%) despite the fact that its business volume is still small, Ontime (+78.8%) and CTT Express (+60.9%).

However, not all these operators have obtained good results, registering decreases in the case of the business figures of ICS (-30.2%), DHL Parcel (-24.5%) and Asendia (-17.2%) .

Shipments and revenues experience a greater increase in the rest of the CEP operators

Although we commented that the number of shipments made in 2021 had increased considerably, in the following graph we can see how it is largely due to large increase in shipments (315.3%) made by the group of “other CEP operators”: those that are not included in the urgent transport network. This “other CEP operators” includes large companies such as Amazon, DHL, Spring, UPS, TNT or Fedex, while the CNMC classifies operators such as CTT Express, Envialia, GLS, MRW or SEUR as urgent transport.

Likewise, this increase is also reflected in the income results of this group, which increased by 131.6%. The urgent transport networks of national scope were the second ones that registered the most shipments and income. Remaining in third place for public operators, although it is not surprising given that this group is made up only of Correos and Correos Express.

Small package shipments were the most common in 2021 and the ones that generated the most revenue

The packages up to 2kg They were the ones who recorded a higher number of shipments in the CEP segment, representing the 69.7% of total shipments. This, in turn, directly influenced the fact that it is also the type of product that obtained the most income (51.2%).

For their part, packages between 2 and 20kg represented 26.2% of shipments and 31.8% of revenue, ranking second. While heavier orders (over 20kg) only accounted for 4.1% of shipments and 17% of revenue.

72.3% of shipments are national and represent 66.5% of revenue

Studying the flow from origin to destination of the packages sent, in 2021 the vast majority of these were national. Likewise, they were the ones that reported the highest number of admissions. In second place, in terms of number of shipments, were imports, representing 16%. Nevertheless, it was exports that reported the second highest revenue figure (18.9%).

Correos is also crowned in the distribution of shipments originating in eCommerce

When asked about the operator that delivered their last order originating from an eCommerce, the respondents once again pointed to Correos and Correos Express as the majority options (39.6%). Likewise, the following three positions are repeated again, occupying them: SEUR (11.4%), MRW (10.6%) and DHL (6.8%).

On the other hand, e-commerce proved to have a good service by offering various options to its buyers, as indicated by the respondents. The main options available to them were: delivery termthe shipping costthe delivery time and the provider selection of the parcel service. Although, in these last two cases, less than 30% of those surveyed indicated that they had enjoyed these options.
