In the eighth class of this second Genesis Framework Child Themes course we are going to work with the Mai Life Style Pro theme.
Mai Pro (so I have renamed it to avoid using that long name) It is presented as a solution with which you can finally have full control of your theme created in Genesis. The idea is good. Great, especially for those users who have respect for copying and pasting snippets.
So Mai Pro comes with hundreds of options so you can customize almost anything in your project. Colors, sizes, patterns, stripes… Everything can be easily edited and modified: You can create stunning designs without touching a single line of code. In his demo, you can see 3 home designs to give you an idea of the potential.
But all this control has its dark side. And it is that they have based the composition of these designs on a page builder of the theme that uses shortcodes for everything.
Let’s start with the first video, in which we will take a tour of the theme to see its sections and install all the plugins. We will also add the demo material to start layout.
As we can see, on the one hand you have a template (template that you can choose from on the pages) called Sections that, when selected and saved, deletes or modifies the text editor to turn it into a section area that you can add, order or eliminate. It is somewhat reminiscent of the Gutenberg blocks that are about to go live in WordPress. But really it’s just a more visual aspect than anything else.
So this Home is not assembled from the Widget-based customizer as we have done so far. But we will have to create a Home page and assign this template to start designing.
On the other hand, you have the shortcodes. These have lots of possible parameters to display the content and decide how to display it.
We are now going to assemble the home with this page builder and the instructions that I leave you linked below.
In conclusion: You will have full control of how to design and display content. But you will always depend on this theme by using its own page builder based on shortcodes. That is to say, all the pages that you create with it will not be worth tomorrow if you change the subject.
Now time to enter the customizer to see Widgets and other very interesting settings.
As you can see, the theme has a lot of potential for projects that do not plan to change much or scale. So it could be great to use it to create corporate websites or blogs (most of the cases). Take a look at it, it’s very good and maybe it’s what you were waiting for.
In my personal opinion, I love the ease of use and the impeccable design, but the spirit of StudioPress is loaded a bit, whose most appreciated characteristic for me is the approach of very lean themes, with very few things, easy to use and totally scalable. through the snippets and their hooks. 🙂
