After several weeks of tug-of-war between the Government and the ERC over the new audiovisual law and the inclusion of content in the co-official languages of Spain, Netflix announced this Tuesday that it will have a catalog of 70 titles in Catalan, Galician and Basque, according to reports Advance sources from the streaming platform to Europa Press.
This will be done gradually as they become available on the service, so that this year’s selection will be in the catalog completely by the end of 2022. The aforementioned sources from the US company have detailed that the audiovisual work that will be will add throughout 2022 represents some 600 hours of subtitled international films and series, and some 60 hours of content for children and families dubbed in the three languages (a total of about 200 hours of subtitles and about 20 hours of dubbing in each language).
Despite the controversy that has surrounded the new audiovisual law in recent months, neither Netflix nor any video-on-demand platform had ruled on the inclusion of content in these languages. As Garriga explained, the streaming platform itself will be in charge of assuming the cost of subtitling or dubbing these 70 annual titles, and he has hoped that it will be a figure that will grow because it will help linguistic diversity.
