Pernod Ricard buys Bodeboca, one year after taking control of Uvinum – Marketing 4 Ecommerce – Your online marketing magazine for e-commerce

After only a year of, now the French group Pernod Ricard buys. Both companies will continue to operate independently, but will develop an important synergy in order to optimize the shopping experience of the more than 1 million customers they both have. As a whole, it is estimated that they will achieve a turnover of around 11 million euros, of which 9.8 million will come from Bodeboca, a union that will seek leadership in the sector in Europe.

Pernod Ricard buys Bodeboca to strengthen its online presence

Founded by the French Greg Bulckaert and Nathanaël Berbessou, the company, a pioneer in implementing the private online wine sales model, has managed to position itself as the leading platform for online wine sales in Spain, in addition to offering distilled beverages and various accessories to satisfy its customers.

Both founders controlled 40% of the shares of Bodeboca, to which were added the funds of Faraday Venture Partners, Caixa Capital Risc and a series of private investors such as Michael Kleindl, co-founder of the Seaya Ventures fund and Aquilino Peña, founder of the Kibo fund Ventures. In all his rounds, the company added almost 2 million euros of capital.

Bodeboca currently has the largest online community of wine lovers: more than 900,000 members and adding more than 10,000 new members per month. Although the price for which Pernod Ricard buys Bodeboca has not been made public, they assure that the amount is around 10 million euros.

Last year Bodeboca managed to reach and profits of around 100,000 euros, offering on its platform more than 6,000 wines that come from 1,500 wineries.

The objective is to create synergies between both online wine sales platforms

On the other hand, which closed last year with income of 1.2 million eurossells more than 110,000 products in 14 countries thanks to different agreements with the main distributors and wineries, and its platform allows interaction between users in addition to having a personal advice service.

Pernod Ricard’s strategy to consolidate itself as leader of wine eCommerce in Europe will be to improve their skills related to the digitalization of the alcoholic beverages sector through the two platforms, respecting their individual growth.

On the one hand Uvinum will continue its role as an open global marketplace to any external provider, while Bodeboca will continue as a retail eCommerce for producers and wineries.

This new purchasing model is on the rise, and that is why e-commerce in the sector is growing exponentially around the world.

In its fiscal year 2018, Pernod Ricard closed with revenues of almost 9,000 million euros. The company operates in Spain through the subsidiaries Pernod Ricard Spain, Pernod Ricard Winemakers Spain and Pernod Ricard Canarias, being the leader in spirits in the country and ranking among the top ten in wines.
