The rise in registration tax will affect 250,000 cars purchased in 2021

The Government estimates that some 250,000 vehicles purchased in 2021 but delivered in 2022 will be affected by the increase in the Special Tax on Certain Means of Transport, better known as registration tax.

This increase corresponds to its adaptation to the new European regulations on polluting emissions, in force since January 1.

This is recognized in a response registered in the Congress of Deputies, to which Europa Press has had access, to the deputy of Foro Asturias, Isidro Martínez Oblanca.

This representative highlighted in his question how thousands of buyers have been affected by the delay caused by the supply crisis, mainly semiconductors, and the shortage of raw materials, which is significantly affecting the automotive industry.

In its response, the Government specifies that the increase in the registration tax according to the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of the vehicle will be applied to buyers who receive their new vehicles in 2022, even if they had formalized their acquisition last year.

“According to the first estimates, it is estimated that the number of vehicles in this situation amounts to about 250,000,” the Executive added in his response.

Intended for cars that emit more than 120 g of CO2/km

All this after the entry into force, since January 1, of the update of the emissions sections, based on the WLTP emissions protocol, stricter than the previous NEDC, which reduces the number of models exempt from paying this fee. .

The increase was scheduled for the middle of last year, but after the opposition forced a legal change to compensate for the tax increase, the Government accepted a temporary tax reduction to extend this increase to January 1, 2022.

Since January 1 of this year, those models that emit less than 120 grams of CO2 for each kilometer traveled do not pay registration tax.

While vehicles that emit between 121 and 159 grams of CO2 pay 4.75% of this tax and 9.75% is paid by customers with cars that emit between 160 and 199 grams of CO2. The last section, those vehicles that eject more than 200 grams, must pay 14.75%.
