This is Glovo’s “commitment”: the startup announces a new way of relating to its delivery people – Marketing 4 Ecommerce – Your online marketing magazine for e-commerce

Following the boost it has gained due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the digital economy has evolved into a complex ecosystem, opening up many new employment and entrepreneurship opportunities, which are helping to redefine the global economy. Within this new scenario, the self-employed have found an open job market, especially in the delivery sector, which has had exponential growth.

However, the adaptation of the labor system to this new predominantly autonomous panorama has generated multiple and recurring conflicts, which ended up leading to the approval of the a couple of months ago.

The Couriers’ Pledge, Glovo’s response to improve the working conditions of its riders

The business model of has been under public scrutiny for some time, in terms of the quality of work of its riders. And, although it has been endorsed by different legal rulings, the general situation has ruled that he was in rather unfair or even precarious work situations.

Therefore, in order to create a better and more adequate work system for his riders, the Spaniard launched his new action plan. The Couriers’ Pledgeas this initiative is called, aims to be a commitment to improve the working conditions of the more than 74,000 active riders on its platform. These, according to what is proposed by the company, will continue to be autonomous, but they will have access to new conditions of job security, salary, etc.

To launch this global plan, the Spanish company has teamed up with fairwork, a foundation created by the University of Oxford and the WZB Social Science Center in Berlin. This focuses its efforts on identifying the best and worst workplaces, as well as helping the latter to create better ecosystems. In this way, Glovo has worked with this and other organizations to create its action plan, with which it hopes to benefit at least 40% of its fleet by the end of July 2022, and its entire workforce by 2023. In agreement with the company will be Morocco and Georgia the first countries, of the 24 in which the company is present, in which this plan comes into force.

What does the Couriers Pledge

According to what was stated by the Glovo board, the purpose of this new beginning of the company’s approach is to generate a system more appropriate to the complexity and evolution of the current economy. For it pose a hybrid figure of the delivery men where, as we mentioned, they maintain their autonomy but have better benefits and working conditions. As Óscar Pierre explains, CEO of Glovo: “A hybrid model where people can have flexibility, but have much more coverage such as a minimum wage per connected minute, the right to vacations, days when one is sick, professional training, etc.”

To achieve this, the following series of benefits have been proposed within this new Couriers Pledge:

  • Fairer Earnings: At this point Glovo announces more adequate salaries, with a base hourly wage for all riders, as well as rewards for regular collaborators, serving as a work incentive.
  • 360° security: The biggest problem for riders so far is the lack of safety on the job. For this reason, it is planned to implement new preventive benefits in case of exceptional situations, such as theft, accidents, etc. Benefits for sick leave, maternity and even a system of benefits for “Family Expenses” will also be incorporated. Safety kits for riders will also be provided along with the implementation of repair stations for their bikes.
  • Proactive management: Improvements in communications between the riders and their associations with the company, facilitating dialogue and understanding between the parties on any situation that may arise.
  • Care of the community of riders: Finally, courses on entrepreneurship, business management and the development of different skills will also be offered to riders. This as an initiative to promote their professional development. In addition, an SOS button is added to the application for emergencies.
