At the end of last December, Spain was forced to do so and it was conceived as a potential threat to citizenship and the protection of vaccines. Fernando Simón, director of the Center for Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies (CCAES), assured this Monday in his usual press conference that the British variant is already “our variant”, since it has become the majority, with a presence of between 60 and 70%. For this reason, he has insisted that it should stop being treated as a novelty and focus instead on the implications of its prevalence.
The most important would be beneficial for our country, Simón insisted: “By competing with each other, the British variant is not giving space to the South African and Brazilian, and knowing that, by not giving space to these variants that escape a little from the of vaccines, is favoring us or could be favoring us”.
Simón acknowledged that the message may be shocking, but that it is actually supported by the fact that the analyzes regarding the variants cannot only include their transmission capacity and their lethality (aspects for which the alarm was raised months ago with the variant), but other subjects of study must also be added, such as the prevalence, the effect on the vaccines or the impact on other strains.
Thus, concern or attention should be directed, says Simón, towards the South African and Brazilian variants (), which present greater resistance to vaccines. The three vaccines approved by the European Medicines Agency and administered in Spain (Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca), as well as the next one from Janssen, are effective against the virus.
