Carrefour + Google: an alliance for a new eCommerce model in Europe

The French large-scale retailer, which also works in other sectors such as fashion or travel, has made public its strategic alliance with the technology giant, becoming the first european partner with which you will launch these functions. Seeking a balance in which Google’s side will contribute its skills in technological tools and Carrefour’s will be a leading brand in Europe.

explains the three pillars on which this alliance will revolve:

  • Carrefour will be part of the Google ecosystem (in ), which means that it will have a presence in different company tools, such as assistants for mobile phones, integrated speakers and Google Shopping.
  • Innovation laboratory. To implement these innovations and continue developing them, both companies are preparing a laboratory that will start working this summer in Paris and that focuses on cooperation between Carrefour engineers and Google Cloud artificial intelligence experts. All this with the aim of improving the consumer experience.
  • digital transformation. To achieve a correct implementation of these innovations, more than 1,000 Carrefour employees will be trained during the next six months, paying special attention to knowledge about Google Cloud and other company products such as Gmail, Calendar, Docs…

All initiatives will be developed in the coming months and their arrival to consumers is expected for the next year 2019. With these steps, Carrefour products will be available on new devices, through Google Home and Google Assistant.

In this sense, the CEO of Carrefour, Alexandre Bombard, has declared: “I would like to thank the Google teams, both in France and in the United States, for this strategic partnership for our two groups. This alliance makes Carrefour Google’s first partner in mass distribution e-commerce in Europe, creating a strong link between the two companies. It also marks an important step in the new story written by Carrefour since the announcement of the Carrefour 2022 plan. It allows us to accelerate our digital evolution and have a head start in implementing the omnichannel approach we want to offer our customers.”

For its part, Sebastien MissoffeManaging Director of Google France explained: “Consumers are frustrated with disconnected experiences throughout the Buyer’s Journey, often leading to abandoned carts and low customer satisfaction and loyalty. Shoppers want simple, personalized, and assisted experiences that help them decide what to buy, help them create carts across devices, and offer a seamless checkout process.”

Therefore, Carrefour allies itself with Google looking for a new future in online sales that allow the French retailer to improve its position with respect to other competitors.
