Security has always been one of the constant concerns within digital media, especially when it comes to dating apps like Tinder, in which users may harbor doubts about whether the other person is really who they say they are or if it is a fake profile, a stalker or a scam.
For this reason, the application belonging to Match Group, has spent years investing in reinforcing security within its platform. In this sense, it has announced the incorporation of a new verification modality, which will drive a safer and more authentic environment within the app.
Identity verification is coming to Tinder, as a mostly voluntary option
As an application designed to meet people, Tinder must offer a safe environment so that its users can interact with complete confidence with their matches, that is, people who show mutual interest on the platform. For this reason the dating app has been implementing different degrees of verification, such as photo verification.
This feature has been available on the app for some time and allows Tinder users to know if they are talking to the person shown on the profile. Accounts that have passed this verification will have a blue badge with a checkmark, very similar to the one provided in verified Twitter accounts.
The new validation will not replace the aforementioned, but rather It will live together with it to offer greater security. This new verification will imply the load of the respective identity document of each country (for example, in Spain it would be the DNI). With this, the company hopes to reinforce an environment of trust among its users and avoid the proliferation of false profiles, which can generate a bad experience for those who use the application, while at the same time presenting a danger to its integrity.
The company has stated that verification will initially be implemented worldwide, on a voluntary basis, except in countries where it is mandatory. An example of this is Japanwhere Tinder implemented this function since 2019, since according to the legislation of the Japanese country, users must validate that they are over 18 years of age to use the app.
A step further in the fight for a safer digital environment
Applications like Tinder offer an innovative, current and spontaneous way to meet people. However, based on the level of anonymity that digital media present, it can also be a place to scam or impersonate other people. Therefore, the implementation of this new modality promotes growth for the app.

However, the voluntary nature of the implementation could lower the desired level of security with the measure. On several occasions the presence of sexual predators or false profiles in this type of app has been reported, so verification could help identify and reduce this type of user in order to create a safer platform, but being able to opt out verified, those people could still use the Tinder services.
In this same order of ideas, Tinder also announced its integration with Garbo. This is a non-profit platform aimed at background check, according to public information offered by the countries. This announcement, added to the identity verification, could take the dating application one step further in the construction of a safer digital environment and open the doors to the use of this type of official identification in the verification of profiles in all kinds of of .
