WordPress oEmbeds – .com

The weekend arrives again, and with it a post about the most basic of WordPress. Today we will see what oEmbeds are, their advantages and how to use them.

The oEmbed is a format that allows embedding the representation of a URL in a web. What does that mean in Christian? Simply that it is an easy way to embed something on your website. That something can be an image, a video, a gallery, a file, etc. Anything can be an oEmbed.

In WordPress the use cannot be easier. We simply have to write a loose URL in a new paragraph (with nothing else), and that embedded “resource” will automatically appear in its place. For example, let’s put a Youtube video.

This same one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HxTzmmN_XoM As you can see, by being part of this paragraph, nothing happens. But what if I create a new paragraph and put it there, without any other text? Well, neither more nor less than this:

As you can see, instead of the URL “https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HxTzmmN_XoM”, what appears is a YouTube video called “What’s New in WordPress 4.1”. That happens because WordPress has detected it as such, and automatically displays the video instead of the URL. Comfortable right?

But do not think that the oEmbed is only for that, because the thing does not stop there. There are, including Twitter, Flickr, Instagram, Meetup, SlideShare, SoundCloud, Vimeo, etc. Let’s see some examples:

A little detail

The use of oEmbeds is, without a doubt, very comfortable and practical, but there is also a detail that we must consider. The lack of control. By default, oEmbeds go without parameters, so what is displayed is what the service wants to be displayed, but you cannot indicate, for example, the dimensions of the photo, such as height and width. And that means that sometimes the result is not always the desired one.

In the case that we want to control the result, or that we don’t want to put the URL in its own line or paragraph, we can use the shortcode which does something similar, and we can even indicate a maximum width and height, such as http://aquí-la-url.que/quieras
